About
The one place in this directory you have to step outside Blackheath for — and it earns the trip. The Eltham GPO is Eltham's old Post Office turned pub, and it wears its history well: tall ceilings, glazed tiling and the bones of the original sorting hall left intact rather than stripped out. That character is exactly why we chose it. South-east London is not short of pubs, but it is short of pubs that feel like somewhere rather than anywhere, and this one does. Ten minutes on the bus or a brisk walk across the heath gets you a roaring fire for a winter afternoon, a beer garden for a long summer evening, freshly prepared pub classics and a Sunday roast the locals will happily argue is the best around, local craft beer on tap, live music on Fridays and a quiz night with a genuine following. Being off the high street has kept it a neighbourhood pub rather than a passing-trade one, which is the whole charm.
